Difference Between Lithium Ion & Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries

by | Oct 13, 2026 | Power Systems

Lithium-Ion Batteries (LiON)

  • Energy Density: Higher energy density, meaning they can store more energy in a smaller space.
  • Lifespan: Generally shorter lifespan compared to LiFePO4 batteries.
  • Cost: Typically more expensive due to the use of materials like cobalt.
  • Safety: More prone to overheating and thermal runaway, which can lead to fires.
  • Common Uses: Widely used in consumer electronics like smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) Batteries

  • Energy Density: Lower energy density, so they are bulkier for the same amount of energy storage.
  • Lifespan: Longer lifespan, often lasting several thousand charge cycles.
  • Cost: Generally less expensive as they use more abundant materials like iron.
  • Safety: Much safer with better thermal stability and less risk of overheating.
  • Common Uses: Often used in applications where safety and longevity are crucial, such as in electric buses, solar energy storage, and marine applications12.
